How To Take Product Pictures For Amazon: Improving Your Amazon Product Photography With Surveys

As an Amazon seller, if you create many of your own listings, it can be difficult to determine the best photos to use to showcase your products.

You could do some A/B product photography testing on Amazon - but that takes time, and can prove to be very costly. Especially if you’re running paid promotions. Plus, you then have to set up test systems and work out how to analyze the results.

Fortunately, there’s an easier way to test your product photography. There’s a new tool on the market called Helpfull. With Helpfull you can quickly run some surveys to get an idea of which photos are favored by the majority of survey respondents.

This allows you to see which of your photos will produce the best results and the most sales. We all know that with online selling, your photos are one of the most important aspects of your product listing.

These are not just simple Amazon product photography tips - this is a system that is going to have a major impact on your ability to thrive on Amazon.

How To Use Helpfull In 6 Easy Steps

1. Visit the website and set up an account.

2. Once you’re logged in, click on “Get Feedback” on the menu on the left-hand side of the page.

3. Give your test a name and select the type of test you want to conduct. We’ll be using “Images” to test our product photos.

4. Fill in the text fields and add your product images. You can add more than 2 product images by clicking on the box that says “+ Add an additional image”. For the tests I ran, I used 4 product images. Remember though, that you don’t want to give the survey respondents too many choices; otherwise, you may not get definitive results. The image requirements for uploading a product photo to Helpfull require that your file is no larger than 10mb.

5. Click on “Select audience”. You now have the choice of running your test with 50, 100, 200 or 500 surveyors. You can also just use the “General” audience or select from a range of “Specific Demographics”.

The different customer demographics include:

  • Age
  • Alcohol
  • Sex
  • Smoking
  • Amazon Prime membership
  • Pets
  • Relationship
  • Social
  • Ethnicity
  • Children
  • Orientation
  • Political affiliations
  • Real estate
  • Fitness/Activity level
  • Tea
  • Mobile
  • Interests

This allows you to really narrow down your audience but each additional “demographic” you add will cost you an extra 0.5 credits for each person who responds. So, if you select “50” people who use “Facebook”, your survey will cost you 75 credits or $7.50.

6. Finally, click on “Select Payment Method” and purchase your credits.

Your test will now be live and you’ll receive your product photography test results in as little as under an hour.

Analyzing The Results of Our Amazon Product Images

A picture is worth a thousand words.

How do we figure out what our product image is saying to our customers - and what does it mean for our business?

I decided to run a test on a couple of product photos for products we have listed on Amazon so I can show you how it works. Here’s the rundown on each test and the results.

Test #1: Olive Oil Bundle Product Photography Test

For this test I make sure to select “100 respondents” and also an age demographic from 26-66+ years. The test was completed in 52 minutes.

As you can see, Option number 3 is clearly the winner with 44 votes. I really like how the different images are displayed from most popular to least.

I also like the fact that you can see, at a glance, what all the respondents have said about the images. Also, if you hover over each response, it tells you the age and sex of each respondent.

The key factors mentioned by the respondents as to why they like image 3 better include:
  • The larger size of the text
  • How the bottle overlaps the book
  • Both products are the same height
  • The image is balanced
  • The white background is not too large

Interestingly, Image 4 also received a lot of votes because the respondents liked the way that the book was tilted. In order for our listings to appear high quality, we need to ensure they look professional; the arrangement of the elements inside the product photos are almost as important as the visual elements themselves.

Note that our Helpfull respondents were eager and willing to share with us their Amazon product photography tips!
In amongst these pollsters are other sellers, marketers, and small business owners - people just like you.

In reading through the responses, most were easy to read and logical. Obviously, there were a small number where English was not the respondent’s first language but they still made sense.

Test #2: Vandoren Product Photography Test

For this test, I once again make sure to select “100 respondents” - but this time, I've stuck with the general audience. The test was completed in 41 minutes.

The results for this test are interesting because there’s not a lot of difference between the votes for product image 4 and product image 1. As you can see, the only difference between the two images is the angle and positioning of the products.

From the results, you would assume that some people prefer more symmetrical straight groupings of products whereas others really like the angling used in our product photos.
However, the results seem to clearly indicate that having the Vandoren clarinet reeds on the left is more favorable.

Reading through the comments, it’s interesting to note the 2 differences in opinion. People who preferred product image 1, said that they liked the structure of the product images and how they are symmetrical to each other.

On the other hand, people who preferred product image 4, said that the product image was more creative and less structured.

From these results, I would most likely choose product image 1 as my main product image photo in an Amazon listing and then add product image 4 as a supplementary photo. It might also be prudent to play around with the main image a little more and run another test or two.

Here are some things I would change in the images before I ran another test:
  • See if I could make the Juno clarinet reed box larger.
  • Increase the size of the journal.
  • Change the position of the journal and the cork grease in product image 1.
  • Have the journal at an angle to the right of the reeds and the cork grease straight but next to each other so that one is under the reeds and one is under the journal.

To Sum Up

Using Helpfull is a great way to test your product images. It allows you to determine which image would be the most popular. The tests are quick and easy to set up and take under an hour to be completed.

When you read through the comments received from respondents, you can easily understand which elements of your photos are the most appealing. This will help you to look at your images more critically and understand what appeals to different people.

It also helps to give you ideas on how to improve your images, so that you can appeal to more buyers.

All in all, Helpfull's surveying capabilities have allowed me to improve the quality of my Amazon product photography - and as a result, my sales.
